When deciding how to present the reception dinner, significant thought should go into this particular wedding detail. Undoubtedly, food and beverage selection are one of the most important wedding essentials and how you choose to serve your food will be just as important. One key element to consider when deciding on the best style of dinner-service is the style of your wedding. Weddings are typically styled in either one of three main classifications: formal, informal, and somewhere in-between the previous two. Most couples prefer their wedding-style and the way in which they serve the dinner to depict an identical feel of the evening. Seeing that this is a constant conversation between myself and clients, I’ve decided to center this post on the common dinner service trends and how to be sure you’re choosing the best option to accommodate your hungry guests.

Formal weddings:

If hosting a formal wedding reception, chances are your wedding planner/coordinator will suggest serving a plated dinner. A plated dinner is considered the most formal dinner-service option. Guests are individually served each course, a soup, salad, and an entrée (perhaps an intermezzo as well) by friendly, experienced, event servers. This method of dinner-service allows guests to remain comfortably seated while engaging in healthy conversational banter, only to lift their silverware and enjoy what has been placed in front of them by the servers. This method of dinner-service is ideal for serving any amount of guests (large or small) due to the seated nature and formality.  It should be noted, plated dinner-service requires more servers. One set of servers will be needed to do the plating behind the scenes (in the kitchen), and the second set of servers will be used to serve the meal to guests. Most venues offer plated dinner service as a part of their food and beverage package so be sure to check with your contracted venue/caterer to discuss your options in detail.

Informal weddings:

If hosting an informal wedding, buffet dinner-service can be a considerable option. Buffet dinner-service is a self-serving style where guests serve themselves. This style is a great method for feeding large numbers of people with minimal help. This method of dinner-service provides guests with a relaxed, informal dining experience, and it offers varied menu options. A typical buffet presentation will consist of food placed on one or more tables close by, but away from, the tables where the guests will be seated during dinner. The guests will go to the buffet tables and serve themselves from a variety of menu items. Buffet dinner-service can be set-up to allow guests to bring their plates from their seat to the buffet line where they are given a portion from a server (at one or more stations) or all dinnerware and silverware can be handed to the guests by the servers as they are next in line. Since a buffet involves people serving themselves, it is less elegant than the aforementioned plated option. Depending on the number of guests being served, buffet dinner-service can diminish the time  and quality of dinner conversation due to guests having to wait in line to be served.

Somewhere in-between weddings: If hosting a wedding that is a cross between formal and informal, family-style dinner-service may be the choice for you. Family-style dinner-service has become increasingly popular over the years. This increase in trend can be attributed to the casual, yet elegant, feel of a family-style dinner-service. As opposed to having guests stand in line, as would be the case with buffet service, guests remain seated, as would be the case with plated service. With family-style, the caterer/venue will serve the food with large serving bowls and platters containing the entrées. The appetizers, salads, main course dishes and deserts are placed on the table where each individual can serve themselves. Family-style dinners create an atmosphere of warmth and comfort. As people pass food it naturally stimulates conversation which is great for the new union of two families. This method of dinner-service works well with any number of guests as well.

In conclusion, when deciding what serving style best accommodates your wedding style, consider some of the central reasons for selection: style of wedding, number of guests , menu, and personal preference. The aforementioned wedding styles fit well with each corresponding dinner-service but keep in mind, couples are surely free to choose which ever serving option suits them best.
