Traditional or Modern Veil, Head Piece, Floral Crown…What’s your choice?

Author Lisa O’Hearn

Like so many sacred Wedding Traditions, the Wedding Veil has its own history too.  Dating back to the ancient Greeks & Romans, Brides were dressed in colorful attire to ward off evil spirits & demons, this often included Colorful veils.  Because of the colorful, sometimes dark color, the bride was unable to see through the veil.  This problem, in turn sparked another tradition that we still recognize today, the Bride being walked down the aisle (usually by the Bride’s Father or a Loved One).

Another use of the veil was to disguise the Bride from her soon to be groom, mostly in arranged marriages.  It’s hard for the modern day Bride to comprehend, but arranged married couples commonly had never seen their new spouse, until the day they wed.  Can you imagine??

Customary to most of us, is the Bride in all white.  Originally this tradition of all white signified symbols of purity, chastity, modesty and obedience.  Still in tradition, are Brides who choose White and Off White Wedding Gowns, however the symbols are no longer the same, for most couples.

The Blusher Veil is usually shoulder length and has a piece of fabric that covers the brides face as she walks down the aisle.  I personally like this type of veil, it can be used in informal or formal weddings and give such a sweet touch, as the Bride first sees her Groom , and he sees her.

Three Helpful Tips:

  1. Whatever you choose, it’s best to purchase your dress first, or at least know what style you’re going with, before you consider which style of veil or head accessories.
  2. Be curious; try on a lot of different styles.   You may be surprised at how awesome some are, once tried on.
  3. Make sure to consider how you’ll be wearing your hair and make sure to take your veil with you to your hair trial appointment.
