Planning A Great Gatsby Wedding or Party!

People often ask me, where did the VP come from, in VP Events, Inc.?  I will tell you!  I love all things vintage, I always have.  When I started my business, it was more of a hobby.  I started  as Vintage Productions.  I designed Victorian, Renaissance, 1940’s weddings and parties.  Not all of us are fortunate enough to be able to turn our hobby into a thriving business.  I count my blessings every day.  In 2002, our business had grown to the point of needing to incorporate.  The name Vintage Productions was not available for incorporation.  I wanted to keep the VP as part of our brand, and as a result; VP Events, Inc. was born.  It is with this affinity for a special time period that I decided to focus on the Gatsby inspiration for this blog.

F. Scott Fitzgerald wrote the Great Gatsby in 1925.  It is considered by many to be a contender for the Great American Novel.  It is, in my opinion, a theme of fascination, adoration and decadence.   I personally love the design, celebration and escape of tradition of this period.  These themes will be the foundation.  This poster, showcasing the current film, provides some inspiration for this time period.  The fashion, the art deco design elements are evident and the overall theme is clearly defined.

As with most celebrations, let’s begin with the attire.

I love the back of this dress.  The detail is very reflective of the 1920’s.

What I love about these shoes, jewelry and hair accessory, is that you could use these to embellish a more traditional dress.  Envision how amazing these would look with a tea length champagne, ivory or even black dress!  You see, you don’t have to go over the top with any design element unless you so choose!  You can easily extract specific elements to enhance your own vision and imagination!

Several years ago, we designed a wedding with this time period in mind for a bride and groom of ours.  The invitations we art deco inspired, as are the samples below.  In addition, the table markers were names of celebrities of the time period, with the same art deco designs elements for consistency, as were the escort cards and menus.

 

 

I love the contrast between these, but yet tastefully different ideas.

Now that your guests have their invitations, they are all deciding what to wear.  Who wouldn’t?  How fun to be encouraged to dress from the 1920’s and to bring your dancing shoes!

If you are looking for designers; Miuccia Prada  did the costumes for Daisy Buchanan’s character in the film.

Tiffany & Co. provided the jewelry and Brooks Brothers provided the menswear.  All of these are easily accessible to provide you with inspiration for the attire for your special party!

A colleague of mine, Rrivre Davies, is a brilliant designer of luxury event rentals.  I thought this was a beautiful design concept for this time period.

 

Perhaps your design aesthetic is to go in more of the gold, champagne and black tones.  I love these images, and hope they inspire you too!  I see this design as more an outdoor style wedding, yet themed to the Gatsby era.

For a formal, ballroom type wedding, start with a basic foundation.  The venue, in my opinion needs to reflect a sense of style, with period décor elements.  If you want your main color palette to be black and silver, or black and gold; do yourself a favor and make sure your venue adds to this design.

I am going to consider a black and silver theme.  This sequin chevron design is from La Tavola Linens and would make a beautiful beginning to your tabletop.

This silver fanfare chair is from the Chameleon Chair Collection and would compliment the line shown, perfectly.

For the tabletop décor, I would recommend incorporating feathers, into a taller centerpiece.  I would include beads and other accents that sparkle.  This one is fun!

 

One design challenge that needs to be considered very early on, is the overall direction.  What I have shown you here is more Art Deco, high style.  There are other less formal styles that would still showcase this period in time, and your Great Gatsby theme!

And for the finale!  The cakes!

 

I like this cake because it clearly represents the art deco theme, but also has the cupcakes which are very current.  You see, you can have your cake and eat it too!
