How to Make Big Double Bows in Five Easy Steps

Author Bobette Kyle

Have you seen pictures of big double bows as chair sashes or on pew ends and wish you could make them? If you are like me, doing them the conventional way does not work…the loops end up all uneven or I cannot hold and tie at the same time. And if I do manage to complete a bow it is crooked! That’s why I created this unique method using a leaf rake. The bows come out even and straight every time. AND you do not have to hold it together.  All you need are burlap, a leaf rake, and scissors. Here’s how:

1. Cut about three yards of burlap, four or five inches wide. Fold the end in half, so you get a 2″-2.5″ wide strip.

2. Folding the burlap strip as you go, weave the burlap through a leaf rake so that each row has a total of four sections, two over and two under. Make sure your second section ends at the center or the rake (this is what assures your loops will be even).

3. Weave back and forth for a total of five rows. The “tails” should be on opposite sides.

4. Tie the bow off using a strip of burlap. Threading the tie through the space between the two center prongs, tie it vertically around all five woven rows.

5. Bending the rake prongs inward, remove each section of the bow from the rake.
