Groom’s Cakes

Author Mary Litzsinger

The concept of the Groom’s Cake is believed to have originated in the South during the Victorian era.  At the time, the groom’s cake was not the fun focused design of today.  It was more about tradition.  A small piece of cake was placed in a box and given to unmarried women who attended the wedding.  They did not eat it, but took it home and placed it under their pillow, hoping they would find a husband.  Not under the pillow of course, but as token of hope!

Today’s tradition is more focused on the Groom’s Cake being a gift from the bride.  Many of my bride’s actually surprise the groom with his cake.  The Groom’s Cake focuses on interests or some other representation of the groom.  I personally think it is also a way to have more cake flavors and options for your guests!

I thought it would be fun to offer some categories and photos of potential Groom’s Cakes and other ideas.

Let’s start with sports as most men love sports!

Another of my grooms was a southern California wedding photographer, Brandon Humes.  His bride Stephanie really wanted to bring his love of photography into their wedding.  For his cake, we took an actual photo of the two of them.  The Chef framed it in chocolate and placed it on the cake.  And, he carved a camera out of chocolate and placed it on the cake too!  Here is the final product.

The Groom’s Cake can have its own table.  You can decorate it to go along with the overall theme of the wedding.  You can also create its own space and décor concepts.  I think the most important things here are that it makes a statement, and that it is representative of the Groom!  But if you really can’t see yourself going to edgy, you can do something lovely that still makes a statement.  Here are a few examples:

What I enjoy about the concept of the Groom’s Cake is that it offers a way to really bring the groom into the wedding.  So many times men joke about all they need to do is get a tux and show up.    While I am seeing more and more men involved with the wedding planning, it still is largely women who plan the weddings.  I will say that I do love my grooms and have made great friends with many of them over the years!

Take changes, have fun with your wedding!
